statue. tat. woman. June 27, 2011 at 1:52 pm #36918. topdolla. I am looking to start a half sleeve on my forearm with an Oni mask, the problem is that I cannot tell the difference between Oni masks and Hannya masks. I want the Oni masks because of the meaning, but I definite don't want a hannya inked on me because I didn't know better. The difference between an oni mask and a hannya mask is the gender: oni represents a male demon whereas hannya is female. And unlike the hannya, the oni has a few varying origins. An oni could have come from: A vicious soul beyond redemption. A creature of hell passing down sentences. A soul of the dead. Difference Between Oni and Hannya. Oni and Hannya are two characters from Japanese folklore, and they are often confused with each other. Both are depicted as demonic figures, but they have distinct characteristics that make them unique. Oni are often depicted as large, red-skinned, horned creatures with tusks, while Hannya … Hannya masks tend to have slimmer faces than oni masks. Oni masks tend to also have thick eyebrows as a part of their design (either carved into the mask or with horse hair). Sweaty-Luettace • 1 yr. ago.
